“I love nature and sports. New Zealand is a great combination of them. That is why I am here – to explore and discover my journey in a different part of the world”.
Filippo, an Italian teenager, came to New Zealand to continue his secondary education. In his home country, he studied at a language school. His desire to improve his English and have new experiences led him to the study abroad decision.
“I love nature and sports. New Zealand is a great combination of them. That is why I am here – to explore and discover my journey in a different part of the world,” he said.
Filippo is a student at Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
“I enjoyed studying here so much. The study environment is great as everybody is welcoming and friendly. Although I found it a little bit difficult with vocabulary at the beginning, I overcame it quickly. Now I understand the lessons and easily make friends at school.” he shared.
Practicality is what he loves most about studying in New Zealand.
“We have many organized outdoor activities where we can learn a lot from practical situations. At the moment, I am learning kayaking. First, I learnt basic kayaking in the pool, then we went kayaking in the river excursions. It is all about the practical experience that is a big difference to my school back home.”
Filippo is living in homestay accommodation in Palmerston North.
“Living with my host family is amazing as they are nice and lovely. I also have a ‘little brother’ in my new family. We have a lot of interests in common. We play sports, go fishing, and take the dog and walk together in our free time. He keeps me busy with his long list of exciting activities.
“My life in New Zealand is so exciting and memorable. Incredibly, I haven’t met any significant challenges so far,” Filippo said.
A welcoming environment, friendly people and enjoyable activities have helped Filippo easily integrate himself into Kiwi life.
He is enjoying his journey in New Zealand: “I have never been alone here.”
