Mangaweka Gallery, Mangaweka, Rangitikei
Calling all Artists! From beginners to accomplished! Celebrating 12 years of fun, audacity and creativity Mangaweka Fakes & Forgeries Art Competition and Exhibition this coming on 30th November 2019!
It is time once again to dig out your artists’ materials and get creating your artworks for a prize pool of over $1000+ and a fun day of events, exhibitions, art demonstrations, market stalls and even a Massive Book Fair! – Be sure to mark the 30th of November 2019 in your diaries… Now!
The main art exhibition is open to three groups, Adult section, 16 years and under, plus a special collective schools category. The theme is simple; Create an exact replica, a copy with a twist, a work ‘inspired-by’ or in the ‘style’ of a famous artwork or Artist!
Anyone can enter, novice, professional, young or old, so get creating! All finer details/rules etc on www.richardaslett.co.nz or phone Richard on (06) 382 5774 / 027 52 666 12.
The event was first inspired by world famous Art Forger Karl Sim (aka Goldie) who was actually born in the Rangitikei township of Mangaweka. His works went on to become major collectors and investment pieces after some of them were (allegedly!) signed with other artists signatures and sold on the New Zealand art market in the last Millennium, sparking one of the longest criminal trials in NZ history! Karl Sim received a substantial fine and was ordered to do community work, yet he also craftily changed his name by deed pole to C.F. Goldie immediately after the trail.
He went on to become well known for his cheeky pokes at the ‘established’ art world, and was often a guest speaker and presenter at both Mangaweka Fakes & Forgeries and other big art events. He was the subject of TV1’s ‘Close-up’, appeared on the Good Morning show and has featured in books, and many other newspaper, magazine and radio interviews, before his untimely departure to the big Art Studio in the Sky in October 2013.
Mangaweka continues to honour it’s most famous son today, with this fun art event for all the family. Artworks need to be completed and delivered to the historic “Yellow Church” Gallery on State Highway one, by Tuesday 19th of November, in preparation for the big opening event on Saturday the 30th of November.
As traditional, there will be the state-of-the-art, stupendous and original ‘Fakes & Forgeries’ exhibition at the ‘Yellow Church Gallery’ – a ‘Special School Children’s’ art exhibition at the Village Hall, a massive Book Fair in the Fire-station, activities and Markets in the Museum grounds, with drinks and light refreshments available. There will be art demonstrations and at least one new large outdoor painting to be revealed as part of the ongoing “Mangaweka Masterpiece’s” village open air and walk around art display project.
As mentioned, the Markets in the Museum ground are currently inviting participants to bring along crafts and other produce, or ‘car boot’ items you are simply wanting to move on, at a pre-Christmas sale extravaganza. Pitches are just $10 pre-booked or $20 on the day (pitch only – stalls, car boots, display stands etc to be provided by vendors – thanks).
