Getting Here


Palmerston North Airport is 5 kilometres, or a 10-minute drive from the city centre and is the gateway to the Region and Central New Zealand. The airport has up to 40 scheduled flights per day from all major centres in the country.

Taxi and shuttle services to the city depart from in front of the airport terminal building and many of the major New Zealand vehicle rental companies are represented at the airport. Drivers can access the airport from Airport Drive or McGregor Street and secure 24 hour parking is available with both short and long-term parking rates.

Northbound Train – Palmerston North City is a stop on the famous Northern Explorer train between Auckland and Wellington taking in some of NZ’s most beautiful scenery. The Northern Explorer operates a six day timetable, departing Auckland on Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Wellington on Tuesday, Friday, Sunday.

Southbound Train – Travelling to and from Wellington is easy on the Capital Connection – a two hour commuter rail service between Palmerston North City and Wellington that runs Monday – Friday (excluding public holidays).  


Manawatu has a good variety of national bus services, with NakedBus, ManaBus and Intercity giving access to the rest of the North Island.


Accessing the Manawatu is easy, with multiple options from the main North Island highways. If you take our suggested scenic routes you’ll find that the Region provides a spectacular driving experience.

Suggest driving route from Auckland/ Taupo on SH1 turn off just south of Mangaweka at Vinegar Hill onto ‘The Stormy Point’ route to see dramatic landscapes and drive through picturesque villages and towns.

Suggest driving route from Wellington on SH1, turn right over the railway tracks just before Levin onto SH57 and enjoy a stop off at the village of Shannon for designer clothing, local art and a great cup of coffee. Upon arriving in the City, head for The Square in the heart of the CBD, where the i-SITE is located.
