After a comfy stay in Palmerston North City kick off the day off early with a transfer up to Mangaweka to start the Manawatu Cycleway on The Country Road. Top up with a hot java at Papa Cliff Café, and set off over the historical Mangaweka Bridge to begin your scenic journey.
You’ll be cycling 41km today, so it’s recommended that you stop in to the village of Rangiwahia where there are restrooms (pre packed picnic lunch , and great picnic facilities. You’ll find Rangiwahia after coming through the Mangaweka Viaduct and beneath the stunning papa cliffs.
From Rangiwahia, continue along on some of the regions most scenic roads, and on down through the Mangoira Gorge. Just before Apiti township, head left onto Table Flat Road and continue to Table Flat Farmstay for a night of relaxation, rest and pampering. Soak in the spa pool, enjoy the views and indulge in some tasty home cooking.
You’ll be cycling 45 km today, with the optional extra of some gravel road riding towards your accommodation. Starting off down the Pohangina Valley, you’ll be passing stunning scenery overlooking the Ruahine Ranges while riding on undulating, sometimes windy roads.
Coming down the Pohangina Valley, you’ll be spoilt for scenery as you traverse down the lush green terraces, with the Ruahine Ranges as your backdrop. Stay overnight at Pohangina Heights, surrounded by stunning gardens and incredible views out over the Pohangina Valley.
After a delicious home cooked breakfast to fuel you, head off down the Pohangina Valley towards the town of Ashhurst – 16km away. Take a detour on the way to Pohangina Valley Estate for some wine tasting, visit the Waterford café for morning tea or check out Raumai Reserve for a refreshing swim.
Head on down to Ashhurst, a small village on the outskirts of Palmerston North City. From here, you’re heading back along SH3 for a short while, before ducking down Te Matai Road, and onto Riverside Drive before coming out onto the Manawatu Riverside Pathway. You’ll get several kilometers of relaxing riverside riding, before heading up Fitzherbert Ave into the City.
