Palmerston North City and Manawatu is well known for offering excellent education. The schools are primarily public schools, and comprise of small rural primary schools to large city schools. In New Zealand schools, students begin formal education in Year 1 at the age of five, through to Year 13, which is the final year of secondary education. View school terms for 2014 through to 2017.
There are 86 childcare providers operating within the City and 55 providers operating in the wider Region. This includes kindergartens, early childhood education centres, home based care, play centres and Te Kohanga Reo programmes.
Early Childhood Education Centres (Daycare/Preschool) – There are 81 Early Childhood Education Centres within Palmerston North City and 43 within the Manawatu Region, with price and availability varying by centre and services provided. Centres normally operate between the hours of 7.30am and 6.00pm.
Before and After School Care – There are a number of after school care programmes operating within Palmerston North City and Manawatu. Of those in the City, all of them are only a short drive or walk from the CBD. The majority of these programmes will pick your children up from school, and some will also drop them to school.
Palmerston North City & Manawatu has a large number of primary schools which cater for children from their fifth birthday. Some schools place special emphasis within the school curriculum on subjects such as region, maori language and culture, technology, and sports.
Students in Years 7 and 8 may attend an intermediate school which provides a transition from primary schooling to secondary schooling, however some primary schools also cater for year 7 and 8 students.
The secondary schools of the Region offer high quality educational opportunities for their students. There are both co-education and single sex secondary schools, which cater for Year 9-13. Each of these secondary schools have their own unique values and educational focuses. Some secondary schools are zoned, so be sure to check your address is within the individual school zone.
Feilding and Manawatu District schools – Within the Manawatu Region there are 27 primary schools, one intermediate school based in Feilding, and three secondary schools, two of which are co-education, one all-male.
Palmerston North City schools – Currently there are 30 primary schools, 15 intermediate schools (some of which also teach from primary level), and six secondary schools, four of which are co-education, one all-female and one all-male.
