Solo Sports in Palmerston North City and Manawatu

Cycling – Cycling is extremely popular in Manawatu. The contrast of rolling hills and flat plains makes an attractive, challenging environment for road cyclists. Bike Manawatu is the home of road and track cycling in Manawatu.

Informal rides run every:

– Tuesday & Thursday 6pm – leaving Bike Barn off Oxford Street

– Wednesday 6pm – leaving Avanti Outlet Store in Cuba Street

– Saturday 7.15am – Fitzherbert Avenue (corner Te Awe Awe St)

– Sunday 8am – Manawatu Masters rides leaving Memorial Park.

Mountain biking – Manawatu is filled with excellent trails for Mountain Biking. The Manawatu Mountain Bike Club (MMBC) often organise rides, race days and events for a range of riding levels, to appeal to both recreational and skilled riders.

The Region offers a diverse array of tracks to ride, from riverside jaunts to challenging bush trails.  New tracks are continually being developed, including the large-scale Arapuke Forest Park, which offers fantastic tracks from easy, intermediate and advanced, and a well known ‘expert’ level track.

Golf – The Manawatu Golf Club and the Palmerston North Golf Club are both championship courses in Palmerston North City, and Feilding is home to the Feilding Golf club, a beautiful 18 hole course. The new Orlando Country Club, on the outskirts of Palmerston North City, offers a full driving range and a nine hole golf course. There are several other courses scattered throughout the Region, including the iconic Rangatira Golf Club.

Racing – The Awapuni Racecourse, located in the heart of Palmerston North, is home to Manawatu Racing Club, Marton Jockey Club, Rangitikei Racing Club and Feilding Jockey Club. Multiple race days and events are held here throughout the year to large crowds, including the Oaks Stud Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, New Zealand’s richest Group One two-year-old race.  Harness and greyhound race meetings are held at the Manawatu Raceway.

Stockcars – Held at the Roberston Holden International Speedway in February, the ENZED/Dewtec New Zealand Superstock Teams Championship is the nation’s premier speedway event, where the Palmerston North Panthers play host to other teams from around New Zealand, including the Manawatu Mustangs. During the summer season there is also demolition derbies, the Manawatu championships, and various national events.

Squash – Palmerston North City and Manawatu has long been home to an excellent squash community, with many New Zealand representatives coming from here. Local clubs are governed by Central Squash, who organise tournaments, interclub competitions, SuperChamps and the Prince Series. Squash Gym Palmerston North has world class facilities, well supported by courts at the Massey Recreation Centre.

Inline speed skating – Manawatu Showgrounds Skating Club is home to several national representatives in the sport, including Shane Dobbin, a competitor at the recent Sochi Winter Olympics. In April this year, the Oceania Speed Skating Championships were held in Palmerston North City, with competitors partaking in events which saw them racing around city streets, much to the delight of spectators.
