Theatres in Palmerston North City & Manawatu

Centrepoint Theatre
Celebrating 40 years in 2014, Palmerston North City’s Centrepoint Theatre is the only professional theatre in New Zealand to operate outside the four main centres. Professional theatres like Centrepoint play a vital role in growing New Zealand’s theatre community by creating work for professional actors, designers and technicians – skilled theatre practitioners who keep the industry thriving! Centrepoint also has a proud track record in producing local content for local audiences. Several New Zealand plays that premiered at Centrepoint have gone on to successful runs in theatres across the country.

The Dark Room
The Dark Room provides a platform for new and emerging artists to experiment, develop and showcase their work in theatre, music, comedy, improv or film. The shows here range from one-man (or woman) shows to controversial and quirky storylines, set to provoke conversation amongst the audiences. The Dark Room is also home to The Basement Company, Centrepoint Theatre’s youth development programme that was designed to work with high school students who have a strong passion and talent for performing arts.

Regent Theatre
Designed in 1929 by Charles Hollingshed of Melbourne as “the Picture Palace” of Palmerston North City, the Regent Theatre with its 1,600 seats was hailed as one of the country’s top six movie theatres in the early 1960′s. It was one of the largest built in New Zealand and became a landmark in the city as well as attracting national attention. Today, as a 1,393 seat venue, the Regent on Broadway is still one of New Zealand’s finest performing arts facilities and attracts a wide variety of performances such as the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and even internationally acclaimed stage shows.

Globe Theatre
The Globe Theatre is a dominant feature for motorists coming from the southwest into Palmerston North City. The 2014 revamp will retain much of its unique design, whilst extending the size of the theatre itself and bringing it up to more modern standards. The Globe Theatre is a well-used community theatre fulfilling its original purpose to cater for a variety of local and touring arts and cultural events such as drama, comedy, musical theatre, dance and musical recitals, public artistic competitions, conferences and seminars.

Abbey Musical Theatre
Formerly known as the Palmerston North Operatic Society, Abbey Musical Theatre has proudly provided quality entertainment to the people of the Manawatu for more than 100 years, producing more than 170 shows. Abbey Musical Theatre focuses on giving people the chance to perform on stage and participate in musical theatre as a part of an amateur group that performs at, as close as possible to, professional standard.

Feilding Little Theatre
With the first production ever staged here thought to be in 1938, Feilding Little Theatre is an integral and iconic part of the Feilding performing arts community. Staging a variety of local productions each year, as well as hosting visiting productions, this theatre offers locals and visitors alike a chance to experience quality productions in an historical building. This has been lovingly restored – right through to the colorful murals and artwork that grace its walls inside and out.
